Happy 25th Birthday, cell service.

From our tech friends at the Chicago Sun-Times:

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the first commercial wireless call. It happened Oct. 13, 1983, at Soldier Field, where Ameritech Mobile, now part of Verizon Wireless, made the call from a Motorola DynaTAC 8000X known as the “brick” phone. The phone cost $3,995, was 13 inches long, and weighed 1.75 pounds.

What did your first phone look like? We had a suitcase phone that attached to the family car. The whole thing was about as big as the steering wheel itself, and for the longest time, I refused to delete the outgoing voicemail message: “We’re not the car right now, but if you leave your name, number…” So, happy birthday. And many more.
