Internet connected with presidential election like never before

From Wailin Wong at the Chicago Tribune:

Change has come indeed. This year’s election made new use of the Internet to share information, raise money and foster civic engagement among younger voters. There was enormous hype around digital strategies created by the campaigns, partisan groups and the media.

Wong points out that while email played a role in 2004, it represented mostly one-way communication (not a huge leap from direct mail, automated phone calls, etc).  In 2008, we saw a huge surge in social networking and blogging, and thus, two-way communication and conversations about the candidates and issues.

That said, she makes another fair point:

I’m still wary of the Internet because it’s so easy to get trapped in an online echo chamber.

However you want to look at it, it’s a whole new ballgame indeed. How did the internet affect YOUR Election 2008 experience?
