Motorola touts “Wi-Fi on steroids” in Chicago

From today’s Chicago Sun-Times:

Motorola will tout business uses for its WiMAX mobile Internet technology, slated to roll out in Chicago by year’s end, at a trade show at McCormick Place today and Thursday.

WiMAX, which stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, has been called Wi-Fi on steroids because it promises uninterrupted broadband wireless Internet access to subscribers over long distances. It’s also known as 4G technology.

The show comes on the heels of a series on reports by Credit Sights analyst Zhiping Zhao, who said in an interview that she believes it will be virtually impossible for WiMAX companies to make money off of the technology, which she thinks will see a slow deployment.

WiMAX’s viability remains to be seen … but its emergence signals the importance of this technology and access to a high-speed connection.
