Mobile Road to Recovery

As more people are “cutting the cord” and turning to the Internet and smart phones, not only for communication, but to access information and conduct business, investment in our nation’s communications infrastructure has continued, despite a difficult economy.

According to an article on the New York Times Bits Blog, analysts at Gartner expect a worldwide recovery in technology information spending in 2010, and it looks like these very smart phones, computers and other personal communications devices will be leading the way.

Consumers, communications services and government stimulus programs will be the three main engines of recovery in technology spending, according to Peter Sondergaard, senior vice president for research for Gartner.

And he notes, it’s consumers’ demand for information that will be driving the market.

[…] Consumers are increasingly using all kinds of communications services, especially on their cellphones but also on personal computers. That demand then pulls all sorts of investment by telecommunications companies and others in software, technology services and hardware. “So what you get is this cascading effect driven by the consumer and where enterprise technology is pulled along at the end of the cycle,” he said.

We need to make sure, as new regulations come up for consideration, investment and growth in our communications infrastructure continues to be a priority, so people throughout the United States continue to have access to new and innovative technologies.
