Texting Relief to Haiti
Mobile media is truly becoming the new norm. In the aftermath of the most destructive earthquake to hit Haiti in over 200 years, text messaging is providing a new vehicle for people to lend a helping hand without even leaving their living rooms.
According to Chicago’s RedEye, Haitian born Wyclef Jean is asking people to text “Yele” to 501501 to make a $5 donation his charity, the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. Similarly, the American Red Cross is asking individuals to text “Haiti” to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
The results speak for themselves. According to USA Today:
Mobile text fundraising has exploded onto the scene in a big way during the Haiti disaster, with the American Red Cross reporting it has raised $3 million via texting in just over 24 hours.

“We need to go where people are,” Punley says. “Not everybody is at a computer, not everyone will write a check any more. So we really need to be able to reach out to people in a variety of ways.”
Donations via text are just another testament that our nation is becoming increasingly more wireless.
