Gov. Quinn Signs Bill to Update 25-year old Telephone Laws

CHICAGO – Governor Quinn, today, signed a measure to update our state’s 25-year old telecommunications laws, a move that will bring widespread investment to Illinois, trigger the growth of technology-based companies, and create thousands of jobs for residents.

“The technology sector has continued to grow. Bright, young companies have been a boon for job creation and innovation, despite the difficult economy,” said Lindsay Mosher, executive director of the Illinois Technology Partnership.  “Governor Quinn is a strong technology advocate, paving the way for Illinois companies to continue to develop some of the world’s most advanced new products and services through modern technology and telecommunications policies.”

The telecommunications act, which passed both the House and Senate unanimously in May, was championed by State Sen. Michael Bond, (D – Grayslake), chairman of the Senate Telecommunications and Information Technology Committee and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D – Orland Park), chairman of the House Telecommunications Committee.  The bill also received strong support from Republican Spokespersons, State Rep. Mike Bost (R – Murphysboro) and State Senator Randall Hultgren (R – Wheaton).

“Bringing our state’s telecommunications laws up-to-speed with the 21st century will spark business growth in the technology industry and beyond, providing more consumers access to the most cutting-edge technologies at prices they can afford,” said Mosher.  “We look forward to continuing to work with Governor Quinn and members of the Illinois General Assembly on forward-thinking technology policies, like SB 107, that foster growth and sustainability in the technology sector.”
